This is the story of Cosimo III de' Medici and his "Stufa dei Mugherini." It is also a story of love: the jasmine that captivated the Grand Duke was a particular variety, brought from Goa in 1688. More like a small rose than a classic jasmine, Grand Duke Cosimo III had a special greenhouse built for it and forbade its cultivation throughout the kingdom. Only ducal botanists were permitted to perpetuate the variety in the "Stufa dei Mugherini," the warm jasmine greenhouse at the Villa Medici in Castello, which can still be visited today.
