Galloping from Versailles to Marseille, Madeleine leaves in her wake a breath of audacity. Iris, jasmine, and rose adorn their petals with a dry, masculine leather. This swashbuckling fragrance pays homage to one of the greatest rebels of the 17th century, an accomplished equestrienne and fencer. Madeleine de Maupin, born in 1670 in Versailles, was raised as a man by her father. After being the lover of the Count of Armagnac at the age of 14, she ran away to Marseille with her fencing master. They made a living from fencing exhibitions, in which she wore men's clothing. One day, she was reproached for not being a woman. She then threw down her sword and revealed her breasts before a captivated audience. Later, at 17, she met a young woman named Charlotte with whom she had a forbidden affair. She was then confined to a convent, but Madeleine entered the convent and set it on fire to help her escape, for which she was sentenced to death. After separating from Charlotte, she reunited with the Count of Armagnac in Paris, who obtained a pardon from Louis XIV, and she joined the Paris Opera where she performed both male and female roles.
