Louise and Alexandre were the children of the architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart (1739-1813), famous for building the Paris Stock Exchange and transforming Père Lachaise Cemetery. Born to a painter mother and a Louvre concierge father, Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1828) quickly associated with the best sculptors of the time, such as Jean Baptiste Pigalle and Jean Baptiste Lemoyne. He, who would be recognized as the sculptor of the Enlightenment, captured in stone the portraits of leading figures of his time, such as the Tsarina, Diderot, Voltaire, and Rousseau. The most brilliant portraitist of 18th-century France, Houdon retained a keen interest in the theme of childhood throughout his life. The portraits of the Brongniart children, created in 1777, express with strength and tenderness a trend for a subject that would never go out of style.
