May 1st, Labor Day, is actually the name of several holidays established in the 18th century to celebrate workers (the proletariat). It was in 1889, in homage to the centenary of the French Revolution, that May 1st became associated with the workers' struggle for an eight-hour workday. In Paris, at the beginning of the 20th century, dressmakers offered three sprigs of lily of the valley to their seamstresses and other workers, and it wasn't until 1976 that it became associated with May Day.
